Every time the turbine increases or reverses its flow the huge vehicle slowly moves back and forth with the changes, and if that massive lump of metal is starting to get moved about then you can imagine what’s going to happen to all the little, feather-light humans fighting around it a few seconds later. His eye for comedy and action plus keeping them both tightly controlled with precisely constructed scenes (which also look damn good too incidentally) is impressive and remarkable.įor example, the climatic fight in the wind-turbine is a perfect illustration of Jackie Chan’s skill at setting up and executing a scene. But ‘Operation Condor’ highlights that Chan was also a seriously skilled director with an incredible ability to stage comedic and action set-pieces with fluidity and style. Which brings us to Jackie Chan’s directing because although I’ve known for years that he writes, stars in and directs his own movies I had often just focused on Chan’s physical prowess on screen, assuming he maybe took on the other roles simply to allow him to get his vision of the action made the way he wanted. And every time I thought things couldn’t get any crazier, any more inventive and fun, I got pinned back again by the G-forces of delight and giddiness blasting into me.

So in the world Chan has created it’s totally logical that the Nazis would construct a series of elaborate death-traps under the Saharan desert - in fact, it would make less sense if they hadn’t. It makes sense, just a very stupid kinda sense. Not that ‘Operation Condor’ is a confusing, chaotic mess. In Chan’s hands the answer is more than you can imagine and possibly even tolerate. We are buffeted from one set-piece to the next with the only intention being how much higher can the fun factor be ramped up. One reason it moves so fast is that Chan strips out reason altogether a film this unencumbered by logic or rationale can’t help but fly because nothing is weighing it down.
Not only is it crammed to bursting point already with all that but it proceeds to barrel along at a blistering pace, reaching a level of excitement most other movies would be content to climax with before ‘Operation Condor’ injects a shit tonne of nitro into its engine and gets even more frenetic and insane for another forty minutes. So it’s Jackie’s spin on the Indiana Jones and James Bond films allowing for a story which encompasses treasure hunting, international espionage, secret Nazi bases, booby traps, assassins, sex, comedy, action, stunts, action and, most of all, action.
